Course 1: Foundations of Reading: Typical Development from Oral Language to Reading, From Research to Practice
This course provides a scientifically-based foundation in the cognitive, sociocultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development PK-12. The course presents the key scientifically-based reading research foundations needed to understand how reading develops, including the introduction to effective methods and strategies used to teach literacy skills to young children through young adults.
Course 2: Deep Dive into Phonological Awareness and Phonics: Assessment to Instruction. Strategies and Adaptations Necessary for K-2, 3-5, and 6-12
The course is designed to provide instruction around the fundamental principles and concepts of the structure of language, with a focus on phonological awareness and phonics.
Course 3: Vocabulary, Comprehension and Writing Instruction
This course is a comprehensive exploration of the developmental and instructional implications related to fluent reading, vocabulary acquisition, comprehension, and writing instruction. Along with these core aspects of reading, major skill domains that contribute to the development of written expression are explored. Principles of explicit and systematic instruction of these core aspects of reading and writing are studied and practiced, including the process of text selection and the implementation of comprehension strategy instruction.
Course 4: Root Cause Analysis, Assessment Data to Inform Instructional Practice
The course will address the use of formal and informal assessment procedures used to design and evaluate robust reading instruction and intervention for children in preschool through high school. The foci of the course include the knowledge and skills needed to choose and give appropriate reading assessments for a variety of purposes, data-based decision-making to guide instructional planning and intervention design, and understanding struggling readers including those with reading disabilities.
Course 5: Teaching Struggling Readers to Comprehend Text
This course is designed to address the needs of the struggling reader. Teachers apply current theory and best practice models to refine their knowledge and understanding of the individual needs of learners. They extend and practice skills in applying strategies, techniques, and classroom accommodations and modifications that are instrumental in responding to individual differences within contexts of classrooms and school communities. Candidates will examine research and practices on high-impact reading interventions.
Course 6: Structured Literacy, MTSS, RTI, Intervention Planning
In preparation for the clinical experience, candidates will demonstrate the appropriate interpretation of data as they construct a connected series of high-impact lessons for a variety of learner needs. Candidates will develop data-informed lessons that encompass all 5 components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension), plus writing. The clinical experience will begin 4 weeks into this course.
