Coursework
All students must complete all 9 courses in the Subject Area General Education license pathway.
- All online and face-to-face coursework must be completed at a proficient level.
- Attendance at all monthly face-to-face (in-person and virtual) Saturday classes is required.
- Sufficient progress must be made in coursework prior to beginning the student teaching clinical experience.
Clinical Experience
All candidates must complete a supervised clinical experience of both pre-student teaching and student teaching in accordance with PI 34.023 and 118.19(3)(a).
- Phase One: Pre-student teaching will include a minimum of 40 hours of experience in all grade bands within the license area.
- Phase Two: Student teaching is full-time for the equivalent of one semester (18 weeks) following the pre-student teaching phase.
Candidates complete their clinical experience in one of two ways:
- Hired by a district on a License with Stipulations. Both phases of the clinical experience are completed while working full-time as an employee in a district.
- Traditional pre-student teaching/student teaching. Students complete pre-student teaching by subbing or volunteering in a district. Students complete student teaching working alongside a licensed teacher. This is typically uncompensated.
Portfolio
All candidates will complete and submit a portfolio demonstrating proficiency in Wisconsin's 10 Teaching Standards. The portfolio will be created with elements from the coursework and the clinical experience.
Seminar Days
To assist our candidates with completing phase one of the clinical experience and completing the portfolio in a timely manner, we set aside dates that can be utilized to focus on these specific requirements. The Excellence in Teaching Program team will work with the candidate's school to ensure these days are a priority. Specific dates can be found on our timeline.
